Table 6-2 provides a summary of Daoism in the GUTUL framework.
Table 6-4 and Table 6-6 provide clear and clean definitions for some rather confusing and challenging, but most basic and important Daoist terms.
GUTUL elaborates on four sets of them in the following.
(1) First Set:
Chang Dao 常道 = the Universe being in itself = xxx being in itself
= Nature 自然 = Da Dao 大道 + Dao 道
Dao 道 = substance being in itself
= Chang You 常有 (Something-ness) = You Ming 有名 (The Being)
= Fei Change Kong 非常空 (Not Emptiness) or Kong ke kong 空可空
Da Dao 大道 or Da 大 = space being in itself
= Chang Wu 常无 (Nothingness) = Wu Ming 无名 (The Nonbeing)
= Change Kong 常空 (Emptiness)
Chang Ming 常名 (xxx being) = Wu Ming 无名 (the Nonbeing) + You Ming 有名 (the Being)
You 有 (something) = our consciousness of substance being as itself
Wu 无 (nothing) = our consciousness of space being as itself
Wan Wu 万物 = everything
= our consciousness of everything else as itself
= Ming ke ming 名可名 or Jia Ming 假名 (the makeshift name)
Dao ke dao 道可道
= our consciousness of the Universe being in itself (the asymmetrical part)
De 德 = our consciousness of the Universe being in itself (the symmetrical part)
Tian Di 天地 = the Universe being as itself
Tian 天 = space being as itself
Di 地 = substance being as itself
Ren 人 = human being as itself
(2) Second Set:
Zero 零 = space being in itself = substance being in itself = the Universe being in itself
One 一 = Singularity at the Big Bang
Two 二 = space being as itself 天 + substance being as itself地
Three 三 = human being as itself 人
Wan Wu 万物 = our consciousness of everything being as itself
(3) Third Set:
Dao ke dao, fei Chang Dao 道可道,非常道
= What we think Dao is is not the Eternal Dao
= What we think the nature of the Universe is is not the nature of the Universe
[our consciousness of the Universe being in itself ≠ the Universe being in itself]
[Dao ke dao ≠ Chang Dao]
You ke you, fei Chang You 有可有,非常有
= What we think You is is not the Eternal You
= What we think substance is is not the nature of substance
[our consciousness of substance being as itself ≠ substance being in itself]
[something ≠ something-ness]
Wu ke wu, fei Chang Wu 无可无,非常无
= What we think Wu is is not the Eternal Wu
= What we think space is is not the nature of space
[our consciousness of space being as itself ≠ space being in itself]
[nothing ≠ nothingness]
Ming ke ming, fei Chang Ming 名可名,非常名
= What we think Name is is not the Eternal Name
= What we think xxx being (as itself) is is not xxx being (as itself)
[our consciousness of xxx being (as itself) ≠ xxx being (as itself)]
[Ming ke ming ≠ Chang Ming]
(4) Fourth Set:
Da Dao wu xing, sheng yu Tian Di 大道无形,生育天地。
Da Dao wu qing, yun xing Ri Yue 大道无情,运行日月。
Da Dao wu ming, zhang yang Wan Wu 大道无名,长养万物。
The formless Da Dao gives forms to Tian (space) and Di (substance).
The motionless Da Dao gives motions to Ri (the Sun) and Yue (the Moon).
The nameless Da Dao give names to Wan Wu (everything that comes to our heads).
